The MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Mr Bentley Vass, accompanied by the Head of Department, Mr Rodney Pieterse, Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner Liet. General, Ms. K Otola along with South African Police Service officials; the Directorate of Traffic Regulations and Road Traffic Law Enforcement; DTSL senior managers and officials, today launched the Safer Festive Season Road Safety Campaign for 2024 at the N14 Weighbridge in the ZF Mcgawu District.
The event commenced with a prayer by Chaplain Captain M Titus, and hearty welcoming of guests by the Dawid Kruiper Municipality Mayor, Mr. David Kazi, and continued to share words of encouragement to help promote safer communities and roads; and the Head of Department, Mr Rodney Pieterse, who presented the purpose of the day and the aim of this campaign.
The Provincial Commissioner for SAPS Lietutenant General, Ms K Otola, pledged the support of the SAPS and to intensify the visibility of law enforcement officers during this festive season, in which operations will be implemented to ensure the safety of our community members.
This campaign aims to minimize the current crime rate and road crashes/fatalities that occur in our communities and national roads. “Road Safety Education remains imperative. We need to influence driver behaviour if we want to reduce road fatalities in the province. Research has indicated that most road crashes are related to human behaviour. Through this launch, we aim to reduce road accidents and fatalities”, says MEC Bentley Vass.
MEC Bentley Vass signed off the Traffic Law Enforcement Pledge and handed over of six traffic vehicles. The Head of Ministry, Mr. M Mbekushe, who shared the vote of thanks, continued to express gratitude to all guests and contributors of this campaign.
