Falling under the theme for the year of 2024, “Doing more: Building better infrastructure and delivering efficient services through collaboration”, MEC for the Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison, Mr. Bentley Vass, alongside the Head of Department, Rodney Pieterse, officially launched the October Transport Month 2024 at the Kimberley Weighbridge on the N12 road.
The launch kicked off with a short and warm prayer by one of the SAPS officials. Mrs Nomazizi Shwababa, the Speaker for the Sol Plaatjie Municipality, proceeded to welcome and thank all the guests for their attendance.
Mr. D Modise, from the Transport Operations Directorate, continued to share the purpose for the day and also announce the activities for the rest of October Transport Month 2024 in the Northern Cape which include the Promotion of Non-motorised Transport, School Aviation Competition and the Promotion of Sobriety Campaign in the Transport Domain. “As we all should know, October Transport Month, October Transport Month started in the year of 2005 and it has celebrated annually throughout the country. The Northern Cape Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison is officially launching the 2024 October Transport Month. One of the highlights of today’s event, which is what I am ecstatic about, is the K-78 Roadblock, which will be taking place after the launch.”, said Mr D Modise.
During MEC Bentley Vass speech, he continued to share and express his concerns with matters pertaining to our safety on the roads and how imperative it is for our people to abide to our traffic law enforcement rules. “Transport Month only seeks to highlight the role transport plays in our daily lives. As government, we have been allocated the responsibility to ensure that the transport system in the Northern Cape runs smoothly to help with economic growth and job creation”, says MEC Bentley Vass.
To conclude and close off the launch, a vote of thanks was done by the Acting Mayor of Sol Plaatjie Local Municipality, Mrs Pearl Mouers. Shortly after the event, a K-78 Roadblock took place on the N12 led by the Provincial Commissioner Lt. Gen. Koliswa Otola and MEC Bentley Vass.
Stakeholders in attendance at the event include SAPS, Kimberley Provincial Traffic Officials, Sol Plaatjie Municipal Traffics and Immigration Home Affairs.
