Falling under the latest theme, ‘’It is still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity”, the Gender and Transformation Sub-Directorate unit commemorated and observed the Nelson Mandela International Day at Pniel-landgoed Primary School.
Pniel, a small communal land situated in the outskirts of Barkly West, currently endures extreme challenges of poverty and unemployment. Pniel-landgoed Primary School, which is the beneficiary of this programme, consisting of a total of 176 learners, starting from Grade R until Grade 7.
The outreach programne kick-started with a short prayer from the one of the educators, Mr JM Sekotse, and a warm welcome from the principal of the school, Mrs V Lubbe. The head of the Gender and Transformation Sub-Directorate unit, Ms M Mogorosi, gave the learners a background about the late president Nelson Mandela and impact he has in our society, in which he helped conquer the system surrounding racism and racial segregation.
The aim of this outreach programme is for learners to continue to honour the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela by reflecting and upholding his values, entailing services of humanity and striving to make a positive change within our communities by overcoming poverty and inequity.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks from Mr. R Modise, who then proceeded to thank everyone for their attendance. The department donated a list of items to the school with comprised health packs, sanitary pads, clothes and a delectable cup of soup.
Various stakeholders in attendance include SAPS (South African Police Service); Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) and Scouts, in which they lectured learners about the effects bullying and sexual offences, as well as the consequences and negative impact it has in schools and in our communities.
