MEC Nomandla Bloem in collaboration with MEC Zolile Monakali for Dept. of Education handed over Shova Kalula bicycles, tablets and sports uniforms to pupils at Gariep High School in Prieska, on 23 May 2024. Speaker Giel MacDonald kicked off the event by welcoming the guests in attendance, followed by a word of appreciation from the SGB Chairperson, Mr. C Bostander. The scholars illustrated their sheer talent as they graced the audience with a performance from the choir, followed by a panegyric from the Xhosa praise poets and lastly a performance from the Amapiano dance group.
During MEC Bloem’s speech she presented the Shova Kalula Project to the audience, “Shova Kalula is a flagship created by the Department of Transport in order to make transportation and education more accessible to our youth” said MEC Bloem. She continued, “Just a little over 13 000 bicycles were distributed throughout the Northern Cape Province since 2001.” MEC Bloem elaborated on the benefits of the Shova Kalula bicycles, which serve to improve the social well- being of beneficiaries and reduce their over- reliance on private cars and other intermittent modes. Mr. Reneke concluded the event with a vote of thanks to all stakeholders for their attendance and the donations.
